Living
Well with Diabetes is a series of Living Well with Diabetes is a series of five lessons offered as a follow up to On the Road to Living Well with Diabetes. This program is taught by Washington State University Extension faculty and staff experienced in nutrition education. The program is intended to supplement instruction from qualified health care providers.
Each session is designed in learning by dialogue format, providing participants with opportunity to discuss and practice skills to make healthy food choices and be more active. The lesson materials include an overview, list of supplies, handouts and worksheets and learning task description. The lesson handouts are currently available in English, Spanish and Russian.

Materials
- Living Well with Diabetes: Healthy Meal Plans – Participants examine MyPyramid why it is important to choose more foods from the base of MyPyramid; practice estimating portion sizes of foods and plan healthy meals using the Plate Method.
- Living Well with Diabetes: Cardiovascular Activity – Participants explore the benefits of being more active, generate ideas to incorporate more activity into their life, practice using a pedometer and set goals to incorporate more cardiovascular activity into their routine.
- Living Well with Diabetes: Heart Healthy Meals – Participants examine the recommendations for managing diabetes and heart health; practice reading food labels to find heart healthy foods; explore methods of heart healthy cooking and meal preparation.
- Living Well with Diabetes: Strength and Flexibility Training – Participants problem solve challenges to doing regular activity; identify the benefits of maintaining strength and flexibility; practice strength and flexibility activities using resistance bands; write a plan to add strength and flexibility activities to their routine.
- Living Well with Diabetes: Eating Away from Home – Participants examine strategies for eating healthy when away from home; practice reading menus to find healthy food options; compare products using sugar substitutes; set goals to sustain healthy choices for living well with diabetes.
